Franz Beckenbauer vs Dunga: Stats Compared
Sweeper / Centre-Back, Germany (born 1945, retired 1983) · Defensive Midfielder, Brazil (born 1963, retired 1998)
Franz Beckenbauer versus Dunga is a clash of two unmistakable footballing identities. Comparing across positions is never straightforward, and these two asked different questions of opponents. Franz Beckenbauer finishes with 81 career goals from 776 games — a 0.10 strike rate — against Dunga's 60 from 687 at 0.09 per match. Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. In major honours Franz Beckenbauer collected 16 — headlined by 1× FIFA World Cup (1974) — whereas Dunga amassed 8, led by 1× FIFA World Cup (1994). The sweeper / centre-back duties of Franz Beckenbauer leaned resolute; the defensive midfielder responsibilities of Dunga leaned silky. The wider career context matters too: Franz Beckenbauer peaked around 1974 after representing Bayern Munich, Hamburg, New York Cosmos, while Dunga's defining level came around 1994 across Vasco da Gama, Fiorentina, Stuttgart, Júbilo Iwata. Each, in his own way, set a standard the other is measured against.
