Set José Luis Chilavert alongside Geoff Hurst and the numbers start an argument of their own. Comparing across positions is never straightforward, and these two asked different questions of opponents. On production alone, José Luis Chilavert posted 67 goals across 737 appearances while Geoff Hurst managed 250 across 650. Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. The honours ledger favours José Luis Chilavert with 8 major trophies (1× Copa Libertadores (1994)) against Geoff Hurst's 3 (1× FIFA World Cup (1966)). The goalkeeper duties of José Luis Chilavert leaned commanding; the striker responsibilities of Geoff Hurst leaned predatory. Club journeys add another layer, with José Luis Chilavert reaching his representative peak around 1994 across San Lorenzo, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sarsfield, Strasbourg and Geoff Hurst doing so around 1966 with West Ham United, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion. Greatness, in cases like this, is rarely a zero-sum affair.
