José Luis Chilavert vs Mario Kempes: Stats Compared

Goalkeeper, Paraguay (born 1965, retired 2004) · Striker, Argentina (born 1954, retired 1996)

José Luis Chilavert and Mario Kempes represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? Long after the final whistle, what lingers is influence, and each man reshaped his corner of the game. Career output puts José Luis Chilavert at 67 goals in 737 games, with Mario Kempes at 350 in 600. Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. In major honours José Luis Chilavert collected 8 — headlined by 1× Copa Libertadores (1994) — whereas Mario Kempes amassed 3, led by 1× FIFA World Cup (1978). Their legacies diverge in texture: José Luis Chilavert is remembered as brave, Mario Kempes as predatory. The wider career context matters too: José Luis Chilavert peaked around 1994 after representing San Lorenzo, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sarsfield, Strasbourg, while Mario Kempes's defining level came around 1978 across Rosario Central, Valencia CF, River Plate, Valencia CF, Hércules CF, Austria Vienna. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
