José Luis Chilavert vs Iván Zamorano: Stats Compared

Goalkeeper, Paraguay (born 1965, retired 2004) · Striker, Chile (born 1967, retired 2003)

José Luis Chilavert and Iván Zamorano represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? Beyond the numbers, each man brought a singular aesthetic to the pitch. On production alone, José Luis Chilavert posted 67 goals across 737 appearances while Iván Zamorano managed 280 across 550. Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. José Luis Chilavert departs the game with 8 major pieces of silverware, including 1× Copa Libertadores (1994); Iván Zamorano with 3, including 1× La Liga (1995). Stylistically José Luis Chilavert was reflex-sharp where Iván Zamorano was explosive — two vocabularies of the same sport. Context beyond the headline totals is important: José Luis Chilavert's landmark level arrived around 1994 with a career spanning San Lorenzo, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sarsfield, Strasbourg; Iván Zamorano's came around 1995 across Universidad Católica, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Málaga. Greatness, in cases like this, is rarely a zero-sum affair.
