Garrincha vs Paul Gascoigne: Stats Compared

Right Winger, Brazil (born 1933, retired 1972) · Attacking Midfielder, England (born 1967, retired 2004)

Put Garrincha and Paul Gascoigne side by side and you have a genuine generational conversation. Style separates them as much as statistics: two players, two unmistakable signatures. Garrincha finishes with 245 career goals from 612 games — a 0.40 strike rate — against Paul Gascoigne's 130 from 620 at 0.21 per match. Assists were not reliably tracked for much of their careers, which makes the playmaking comparison an imperfect one; where records exist, Garrincha is credited with 0 and Paul Gascoigne with 90. In major honours Garrincha collected 9 — headlined by 2× FIFA World Cup (1958, 1962) — whereas Paul Gascoigne amassed 6, led by 1× FA Cup (1991). Stylistically Garrincha was ruthless where Paul Gascoigne was creative — two vocabularies of the same sport. Club journeys add another layer, with Garrincha reaching his representative peak around 1962 across Botafogo, Corinthians, Flamengo and Paul Gascoigne doing so around 1990 with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough, Everton, Burnley, Boston United. Greatness, in cases like this, is rarely a zero-sum affair.
