Goalkeeper, Denmark (born 1963, retired 2003) · Attacking Midfielder, Yugoslavia (born 1966, retired 2001)

Comparing Peter Schmeichel with Dejan Savićević means weighing two very different kinds of greatness. Both built reputations on finding the back of the net, but they did it in markedly different ways. On production alone, Peter Schmeichel posted 0 goals across 816 appearances while Dejan Savićević managed 110 across 450. Assists were not reliably tracked for much of their careers, which makes the playmaking comparison an imperfect one; where records exist, Peter Schmeichel is credited with 0 and Dejan Savićević with 70. Trophy counts give Peter Schmeichel 9 and Dejan Savićević 5, with 1× UEFA Champions League (1999) and 1× European Cup (1991) the standout honours respectively. Where Peter Schmeichel was a brave presence in the box, Dejan Savićević offered a creative approach to goalscoring. Their routes to the top were distinct: Peter Schmeichel built his reputation across Brøndby, Manchester United, Sporting CP, Aston Villa, peaking around 1999, while Dejan Savićević reached his defining level around 1994 after spells with Budućnost Podgorica, Red Star Belgrade, AC Milan, Rapid Wien. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
