Sócrates vs Rüştü Reçber: Stats Compared

Attacking Midfielder, Brazil (born 1954, retired 1989) · Goalkeeper, Turkey (born 1973, retired 2011)

Sócrates and Rüştü Reçber represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? It is in how they played, rather than what they won, that the comparison gets interesting. Sócrates finishes with 258 career goals from 594 games — a 0.43 strike rate — against Rüştü Reçber's 0 from 600 at 0.00 per match. Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. Sócrates departs the game with 8 major pieces of silverware, including 3× Campeonato Brasileiro Série A; Rüştü Reçber with 4, including 3× Süper Lig (1996, 2001, 2007). Stylistically Sócrates was incisive where Rüştü Reçber was brave — two vocabularies of the same sport. Context beyond the headline totals is important: Sócrates's landmark level arrived around 1982 with a career spanning Botafogo-SP, Corinthians, Fiorentina, Flamengo; Rüştü Reçber's came around 2002 across Fenerbahçe, Barcelona, Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
