Sócrates vs Nemanja Vidić: Stats Compared

Attacking Midfielder, Brazil (born 1954, retired 1989) · Centre-Back, Serbia (born 1981, retired 2016)

Sócrates and Nemanja Vidić represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? Greatness, in the end, is about who you inspired, and both left a footprint far beyond their own careers. The raw numbers read 258 goals in 594 outings for Sócrates (0.43/game), versus 29 in 518 for Nemanja Vidić (0.06/game). Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. In major honours Sócrates collected 8 — headlined by 3× Campeonato Brasileiro Série A — whereas Nemanja Vidić amassed 8, led by 5× Premier League (2007–2013). Their legacies diverge in texture: Sócrates is remembered as creative, Nemanja Vidić as elegant. Their routes to the top were distinct: Sócrates built his reputation across Botafogo-SP, Corinthians, Fiorentina, Flamengo, peaking around 1982, while Nemanja Vidić reached his defining level around 2009 after spells with Red Star Belgrade, Spartak Moscow, Manchester United, Inter. The honest conclusion is that comparison enriches appreciation rather than crowns a single winner.
