Hristo Stoichkov vs Robin van Persie: Stats Compared

Left Winger, Bulgaria (born 1966, retired 2003) · Striker, Netherlands (born 1983, retired 2019)

Hristo Stoichkov and Robin van Persie represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? Comparing across positions is never straightforward, and these two asked different questions of opponents. Career output puts Hristo Stoichkov at 384 goals in 672 games, with Robin van Persie at 322 in 694. Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. The honours ledger favours Hristo Stoichkov with 9 major trophies (1× European Cup (1992)) against Robin van Persie's 9 (1× Premier League (2013)). As a left winger Hristo Stoichkov bent the role to a flair-driven template; as a striker, Robin van Persie redefined it with ruthless authority. Context beyond the headline totals is important: Hristo Stoichkov's landmark level arrived around 1994 with a career spanning CSKA Sofia, Barcelona, Parma, Chicago Fire; Robin van Persie's came around 2012 across Feyenoord, Arsenal, Manchester United, Fenerbahçe. Rank them how you like — both names are carved into the sport's permanent record.
