Edwin van der Sar vs Pauleta: Stats Compared

Goalkeeper, Netherlands (born 1970, retired 2011) · Striker, Portugal (born 1973, retired 2008)

The Edwin van der Sar–Pauleta comparison is one of those fixtures of footballing folklore. They belonged to different eras, which makes any direct comparison a test of imagination as much as statistics. On production alone, Edwin van der Sar posted 0 goals across 820 appearances while Pauleta managed 240 across 550. Modern assist data only covers part of their careers, so creativity is hard to compare cleanly — Edwin van der Sar is listed at 0 and Pauleta at 40 where figures survive. In major honours Edwin van der Sar collected 9 — headlined by 1× UEFA Champions League (2008) — whereas Pauleta amassed 3, led by 1× Ligue 1 (2000). Across the turn of the millennium and the turn of the millennium respectively, their sweeper-keen and predatory styles captured the spirit of very different footballing times. Club journeys add another layer, with Edwin van der Sar reaching his representative peak around 2008 across Ajax, Juventus, Fulham, Manchester United and Pauleta doing so around 2000 with Vitória Guimarães, Salgueiros, Deportivo La Coruña, Bordeaux, Paris Saint-Germain. Greatness, in cases like this, is rarely a zero-sum affair.
