Few debates split football fans quite like Edwin van der Sar versus Sócrates. Their jobs on the pitch were not the same, yet both redefined what their role could be. The raw numbers read 0 goals in 820 outings for Edwin van der Sar (0.00/game), versus 258 in 594 for Sócrates (0.43/game). Reliable assist tallies simply do not exist for large stretches of their careers, leaving creativity to the eye rather than the spreadsheet. As a goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar bent the role to a imposing template; as a attacking midfielder, Sócrates redefined it with creative authority. The wider career context matters too: Edwin van der Sar peaked around 2008 after representing Ajax, Juventus, Fulham, Manchester United, while Sócrates's defining level came around 1982 across Botafogo-SP, Corinthians, Fiorentina, Flamengo. The honest conclusion is that comparison enriches appreciation rather than crowns a single winner.
