Luka Modrić vs Edwin van der Sar: Stats Compared

Attacking Midfielder, Croatia (born 1985, retired 2024) · Goalkeeper, Netherlands (born 1970, retired 2011)

Put Luka Modrić and Edwin van der Sar side by side and you have a genuine generational conversation. Their jobs on the pitch were not the same, yet both redefined what their role could be. Career output puts Luka Modrić at 90 goals in 900 games, with Edwin van der Sar at 0 in 820. Assists were not reliably tracked for much of their careers, which makes the playmaking comparison an imperfect one; where records exist, Luka Modrić is credited with 150 and Edwin van der Sar with 0. In major honours Luka Modrić collected 9 — headlined by 6× UEFA Champions League (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024) — whereas Edwin van der Sar amassed 9, led by 1× UEFA Champions League (2008). The attacking midfielder duties of Luka Modrić leaned silky; the goalkeeper responsibilities of Edwin van der Sar leaned brave. Their routes to the top were distinct: Luka Modrić built his reputation across Dinamo Zagreb, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, peaking around 2018, while Edwin van der Sar reached his defining level around 2008 after spells with Ajax, Juventus, Fulham, Manchester United. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
