Romário vs José Luis Chilavert: Stats Compared

Striker, Brazil (born 1966, retired 2009) · Goalkeeper, Paraguay (born 1965, retired 2004)

Line up Romário next to José Luis Chilavert and the contrasts come quickly. Long after the final whistle, what lingers is influence, and each man reshaped his corner of the game. By the end Romário had 753 goals from 994 caps and club outings; José Luis Chilavert had 67 from 737. Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. Romário departs the game with 9 major pieces of silverware, including 1× FIFA World Cup (1994); José Luis Chilavert with 8, including 1× Copa Libertadores (1994). Their legacies diverge in texture: Romário is remembered as flair-driven, José Luis Chilavert as reflex-sharp. The wider career context matters too: Romário peaked around 1994 after representing PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Vasco da Gama, while José Luis Chilavert's defining level came around 1994 across San Lorenzo, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sarsfield, Strasbourg. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
