Romário vs Patrick Kluivert: Stats Compared

Striker, Brazil (born 1966, retired 2009) · Striker, Netherlands (born 1976, retired 2008)

Romário and Patrick Kluivert represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? It is in how they played, rather than what they won, that the comparison gets interesting. On production alone, Romário posted 753 goals across 994 appearances while Patrick Kluivert managed 229 across 563. Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. Romário departs the game with 9 major pieces of silverware, including 1× FIFA World Cup (1994); Patrick Kluivert with 8, including 1× UEFA Champions League (1995). Romário played with a explosive that made him unmistakable; Patrick Kluivert brought a predatory that was equally his own. Their routes to the top were distinct: Romário built his reputation across PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Vasco da Gama, peaking around 1994, while Patrick Kluivert reached his defining level around 1999 after spells with Ajax, Milan, Barcelona, Newcastle, Valencia, PSV. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
